“Hope” Is The Thing With Feathers – Recovery Poem By Emily Dickinson

Our friend Owen G. suggested this poem as one that has been foundational in his recovery and his experience in helping others. It has been added to the growing ‘Recovery Poems’ section of the gugogs.org website. Do you have a poem that has helped in your recovery that you’re willing to share with us? Let us know in a comment below and we’ll add it to this growing section of the website. – Bruce M.

“Hope” is the thing with feathers

BY EMILY DICKINSON

“Hope” is the thing with feathers –

That perches in the soul –

And sings the tune without the words –

And never stops – at all –

And sweetest – in the Gale – is heard –

And sore must be the storm –

That could abash the little Bird

That kept so many warm –

I’ve heard it in the chillest land –

And on the strangest Sea –

Yet – never – in Extremity,

It asked a crumb – of me.
