The Gift Of Awareness – By Bonnie Weiss

The capacity of awareness is foundational in personal growth work—it’s the lens through which all meaningful change becomes possible. You can’t change what you can’t see. High-quality awareness—clear, non-judgmental noticing of your thoughts, feelings, patterns, and behaviors—creates space between stimulus and response. That space is where true choice lives.

Much of our suffering comes from unconscious, habitual reactions. Awareness brings these to light, allowing us to respond with intention instead of reacting from conditioning.

When awareness is coupled with kindness, it opens the door to self- acceptance. You start seeing not just the behaviors, but the unmet needs or protective strategies underneath them.

The IFS process of naming our parts allow us some distance from identifying with the reactivity. It gives us space for self-compassion from which kindness can arise. Growth only happens in an atmosphere of love and holding.

Awareness is the key component to this process.

A wonderful exercise, sourced from Gestalt therapy is repeating the phrase,

“Right now I am aware of……” Allow yourself to notice how your awareness shifts through all of your senses: seeing, hearing, thinking, sensing, feeling.” This is fun to do with a partner, taking turns being aware of what is happening in your now.
